YS4CPM is expanding early childhood programming by implementing the Second Step EarlyLearning curriculum in rural southeastern Oklahoma. Serving preschoolers ages 4 and 5, the initiative focuses on social-emotional learning (SEL) to improve school readiness, behavior, and long-term resilience. The evidence-based curriculum, aligned with Head Start and Pre-K standards, teaches empathy, self-regulation, friendship skills, and emotion management through 28 themed lessons using puppets, music, and visuals.
The blended staffing model combines AARP volunteers, Workforce youth, and YS4CPM staff. Older volunteers provide mentorship, youth staff gain workforce experience, and YS4CPM ensures fidelity. Programming occurs in childcare centers, Head Start classrooms, homes, and community spaces. Short-term goals include facilitator training, piloting at 3 sites, and engaging 20 families through take-home activities. Long-term goals include stronger SEL skills, reduced kindergarten behavior issues, workforce development, and intergenerational community partnerships benefiting children, families, and educators.
